MORROW CRYING TOWEL (SUMMARIES OF HEARTBREAKING LOSSES)

LAMAR COUNTY 6, MORROW 0 (Tara) September 5, 1970

Morrow's first varsity game was played on a rainy Saturday night at Tara. Willie Lockett scored on a one-yard run for the visitors with 2:23 left in the third quarter. The team consisted of 29 sophomores and 5 juniors. The starting backfield included Russell Mountain at quarterback, Alan Parker at fullback, Glenn Tinnin at flanker, and Shelton Wimberly at tailback.

HEADLAND 10, MORROW 7 (Tara) October 6, 1972

Mustang quarterback Jeff Denney fumbled on his own 26 to set up Headland's first score, a 37-yard field goal by David Strickland. The junior signal caller atoned for his miscue on the next play as he ran 92 yards for a touchdown to put Morrow up 7-3. The winning score for the Highlanders came in the third on a 22-yard halfback pass from Brad Pager to Danny Ellerbee.

JACKSON 6, MORROW 3 (Away) October 27, 1972

Both offenses were slowed by a cold drizzling rain. Red Devil running back James Morgan scored on an 80-yard run in the first for the game's only touchdown. Van Kale kept Morrow in striking distance with a 27-yard field goal in the second. Jackson had the ball on the Morrow 10 in the fourth. Charles Sinagra sacked the quarterback and blocked the subsequent field goal try to give Morrow a chance. The Mustangs advanced to the Red Devil 33 with 30 seconds to play, but a fourth down pass fell incomplete.

HEADLAND 9, MORROW 6 (Away) October 5, 1973

For the second year in a row the Headland game came down to a field goal. Highlander kicker Rodney Brown nailed the 32-yarder with 32 seconds to go in the game to give his team the win. Both touchdowns in the game came in the first quarter. Mustang quarterback Steve Wilson hit Eddy Householder on a 17-yard scoring pass and Headland's Jim Mellotte answered with a 25-yard toss to Howell Hollis.

NORTH SPRINGS 14, MORROW 13 (Tara) October 19, 1973

North Springs was undefeated and ranked #1 in AA while Morrow was 3-3. Morrow's Kevin Williams scored on a 47-yard run on the third play of the game, but the PAT failed and Morrow led 6-0. Jeff Denney then put Morrow ahead 13-0 on an 11-yard touchdown run in the second. Mustang kicker Tommy Freeman missed a 29-yard field goal attempt with a minute remaining in the game to allow North Springs to escape the upset bid.

LAGRANGE 13, MORROW 7 (Tara) October 24, 1975

Against the heavily favored Grangers, the winless Mustangs gave a tremendous effort only to fall by six. Down 7-0 in the third, Morrow had the ball 4th and 10 at midfield. A fake punt run by blocking back Jimmy Dean gave Morrow a first down at the LaGrange 38. Quarterback Mike King scored on the next play on a keeper around right end to tie the game. With 4:20 left in the game, Morrow again faced a 4th and 10 from midfield, but elected to punt. The Grangers then marched 86 yards with Barry Ross scoring to go-ahead touchdown at the end. Morrow's Keith Wood blocked the PAT to keep the final margin six points.

FOREST PARK 9, MORROW 6 (Tara) November 11, 1977

The game was originally scheduled for the preceding week, but heavy rain forced the game to be postponed. The Panthers got on the board first with quarterback Bobby Bell plunging in from the two. Morrow defensive end John Veldsma blocked the PAT. With 13 seconds to go in the half, Morrow quarterback Craig Carlson hit Veldsma on a 7-yard scoring pass, but Neal Jones' PAT attempt was wide. Panther placekicker Jackie Taylor kicked the game-winning 32-yard field goal in the third. Tony Norman had 164 yards rushing in his last game as a Mustang. Morrow finished 3-7 while Forest Park ended the year 4-5-1.

GRIFFIN 15, MORROW 0 (Tara) November 16, 1979

The 11-0 Mustangs faced the 8-3 Bears for the 6-AAAA championship. Morrow had defeated Griffin 14-0 earlier in the season. The defense held Griffin to 137 yards total offense, but turnovers cost Morrow the game. Tim Bennett had 84 yards rushing on 23 carries. Griffin defeated Stone Mountain 14-7 the following week before bowing to Clarke Central 20-10 in the state semifinal.

MORROW 6, GRIFFIN 23 (Away) October 24, 1980

Griffin was ranked #1 in the state and was averaging 40 points per game. Stacey Driver had already topped the 1000-yard rushing mark in only six games. Driver fumbled the opening kickoff, allowing the Mustangs to score first on a 39-yard Lynn McCollum field goal. He added another from 35 to put Morrow up 6-3 at halftime. Griffin, the eventual state runner-up to Lowndes County, scored three touchdowns in the second half. Driver had just 40 yards on 10 carries.

FAYETTE COUNTY 14, MORROW 13 (Away) November 14, 1980

Morrow faced Fayette County in the first round of the region playoffs and the Mustangs were a decided underdog. Fayette had disposed of Morrow 35-8 in the regular season. Morrow scored first on an alert play by defensive tackle Mike Vinson. He picked up a fumble and tossed it back to Scott Landers who ran in from 25 yards. Donnie Harrell added another touchdown on a 2-yard run and Morrow led 13-0. Fayette County got two touchdowns in the fourth to pull out the win. The winning score came with just 1:34 to go in the game.

RIVERDALE 3, MORROW 0 (Tara) October 15, 1982

Riverdale had a good team, going 8-2 in the regular season and falling 19-14 to Griffin in the playoffs. The Raiders had just upset Newnan 10-8 the previous week. The only points of the game came on a 21-yard Dean Ayers field goal in the second quarter. Riverdale outgained Morrow 225 to 133 in the game.

GRIFFIN 13, MORROW 6 (Tara) September 22, 1983

The 3-0 Mustangs outplayed the Bears on this warm Thursday night, but still lost the game. Morrow scored first on a 22-yard run by Tim Dodson in the first. After Griffin went three and out, Morrow drove to the Bear four-yard line. A fourth down pass to a wide-open Scott Conner bounced off the tight end's shoulder pads and incomplete. Griffin's Wayne Harp hit seven of ten passes for 114 yards to bring his team from behind.

LAGRANGE 24, MORROW 17 (Tara) October 21, 1983

Morrow's homecoming featured the best match-up in the state. The 6-1 Mustangs were a slight underdog to the 7-0 and #1 ranked Grangers. LaGrange had two highly-touted players in quarterback Vince Sutton and tackle Nate Hill. Morrow scored first on a one-yard run by Kevin Hester in the first. Jay Schofield added a 44-yard field goal just before half to put Morrow up 10-0 at the break. LaGrange finally got on the board behind Sutton's passing. The future Alabama star hit 18 of 35 for 222 yards on the night. Nate Hill, a future Auburn star, drilled a 40-yard field goal with 1:37 remaining in the game to send the affair to overtime. Morrow went up 17-10 on a 9-yard run by Hester in the first extra frame. In a cruel twist of fate, Hester fumbled the kickoff return to begin the second overtime period allowing LaGrange to tie the score. Morrow then fumbled again and Freddie Dunson returned the ball 29 yards for the winning touchdown.

RIVERDALE 17, MORROW 13 (Tara) October 18, 1985

In a heartbreaker that eventually cost Morrow a playoff spot, Riverdale scored with 22 seconds remaining in the game to win. Raider quarterback Dimekko Sydney hit Mike Hornsby for an 18-yard score to bring the Raiders from behind. Morrow had gone up 13-10 with 4:22 left on a 33-yard Darren Hutcheson to Pat Turner pass. Turner had 91 yards on three catches and had a 95-yard kickoff return negated by penalty.

GRIFFIN 22, MORROW 21 (Away) October 31, 1986

Morrow completely dominated Griffin for three and a half quarters, only to lose in overtime. Jeff Hood threw two touchdown passes to Ed Hall to stake the Mustangs to a 14-0 halftime lead. Todd Smith added a one-yard score in the third to go up 21-0. The Bears got a scoring run at the 8:36 mark of the fourth. A blocked punt return cut the lead to 21-14 with less than four minutes to play. Quarterback Broderick Allen scored on a two-yard sneak with 19 seconds to play to set up overtime. With Griffin leading on penetration in the second period, Morrow's Simon Martin intercepted and returned the ball to the Griffin 4 to apparently win the game for Morrow. A controversial "head slap" penalty, called long after the interception had been made, gave Griffin the ball back and the win.

MCINTOSH 7, MORROW 0 (Tara) September 17, 1987

This was the only blot on a perfect season. Morrow moved the ball at will between the 20 yard lines, but penalties and turnovers stalled every drive. McIntosh got on the board in the fourth on quarterback John Wilkerson's 10-yard bootleg run. Morrow's Danny Williams ran for 133 yards on just 10 carries, but fumbled twice. This was a rare Thursday night game following the Labor Day break.

JONESBORO 17, MORROW 14 (Tara) September 29, 1989

Morrow's only loss of the regular season came to a 2-2 Jonesboro squad with an excellent game plan. The Cardinals kept the ball on the ground and thus Andre Hastings on the sideline for most of the night. Leonard Clark had 144 yards on 27 carries for Jonesboro and scored one of the touchdowns. Adam Campbell's 30-yard field goal in the third proved to be the winning margin as Hastings' two touchdowns were for naught.

STATESBORO 14, MORROW 7 (Tara) November 23, 1990

Morrow won the right to host the contest by winning the region title. Only two teams from each region qualified for the state playoffs. The fourth quarter began with the score tied 7-7. Statesboro drove 96 yards, consuming most of the clock, to end Morrow's season. Peady Hardy, Morrow's career rushing leader, was held to 66 yards on 22 attempts. He got the Morrow score in the third. Mustang quarterback Michael Worley threw three interceptions and Carlton Oswalt had a chip-shot field goal attempt blocked.

FOREST PARK 12, MORROW 10 (Tara) September 27, 1991

The Mustangs led 10-0 at the half on Carlton Oswalt's 25-yard field goal and a 50-yard Kevin Moody to Steve Bishop pass. Morrow received the second half kickoff and drove to the Forest Park 12. From there, Albert Barber took a handoff left and ran to the goal. Just as he was about to break the plane, a defender popped the ball from his grasp and into the arms of Dion Dean who returned it to the Morrow 45. Panther quarterback Hines Ward then hit receiver Tracy Cummings from 28 to cut the lead to 10-6. Again, Morrow drove the ball the length of the field only to see Tonte Kendrick pick off an errant Moody pass in the end zone. Cepeda Cloud scored the winning touchdown for the Panthers with just over 2 minutes to play.

BAINBRIDGE 14, MORROW 13 (Away) November 26, 1993

The Mustangs completely shut down one of the best running backs in the state, Jonathan Butler, for almost three quarters. Butler found the end zone on a 13-yard scoring run late in the third to give the home team a 7-0 lead. With the rain falling steadily, Morrow went to the air in the fourth with good results. Izell McGill hit Willie Carter on a slant over the middle from the 12 to tie the game at 7. With 1:08 to play, Butler got free and scored for Bainbridge. On third and ten from the 35, McGill hit Carter down the sideline for the score. The extra point was wide left and the season ended on a sour note for Morrow.

LOVEJOY 10, MORROW 9 (Tara) November 4, 1994

The Wildcats, having been erroneously informed that they would secure a playoff berth with a win, played an inspired game to upset the heavily-favored Mustangs. Despite the statistics, Lovejoy led 10-3 with less than a minute to play. Robert Arnaud's two-yard run cut the lead to 10-9, but the extra point was botched when the holder was sacked. Nevertheless, Morrow qualified for the playoffs for the 14th time in school history.

EAST COWETA 23, MORROW 19 (Away) November 18, 1994

East Coweta needed a miracle to hold off the upset-minded Mustangs and got it. Morrow led 19-10 with 6 minutes to play after Joe Bond's 65-yard interception return score. The Indians got two touchdowns in the last 3:48 to steal the game. Willie Carter substituted for the injured Alan Ogletree at quarterback and was 11 of 17 for 142 yards and a touchdown.

TROUP COUNTY 36, MORROW 29 (Away) October 21, 1995

Morrow's Mike Robinson had four touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving, and a school-record 99-yard field goal), but it was wasted as Troup County won in overtime. Troup's Cote Carter also had a huge game with over 300 yards and four scores as well. Troup was set to win the game on a chip-shot field goal at the end of regulation, but Bo Thomas broke through the line and blocked the kick. Carter scored the winning touchdown with 1:26 to go in the second overtime period. The teams combined for over 800 yards total offense.

DOUGLASS 21, MORROW 19 (Tara) September 15, 1996

Douglass has a talent-laden team featuring Jamal Lewis, Dwight Platt, and Darion Hutcherson and was ranked #9 in the nation by USA Today. Both teams scored three touchdowns, but Douglass got a two-point conversion to win by two. Mike Robinson scored twice and Alan Ogletree added the other. Robinson's last score came with 29 seconds remaining in the game. A two-point conversion pass failed as the Astros tackled the intended receiver at the line of scrimmage.

BANNEKER 20, MORROW 14 (Away) September 26, 1997

In a season that featured a series of cruel losses, none could be as devastating as this setback. Morrow had not allowed a fumble return touchdown in 23 years, but it happened this night twice. Banneker could manage just 15 yards rushing and five first downs in 58 minutes of football, but still pulled out the win in overtime. Morrow led by penetration with 28 seconds remaining and had the ball on Banneker's 19. The exchange from center somehow ended up in the hands of linebacker David Anderson who ran 80 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
